Many patients may be entitled to a free NHS-funded home eye test, provided they meet standard NHS sight test eligibility and are unable to leave home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability. This also includes eligible residents in care homes and some day centre settings. 

Patients may qualify if they:

• are aged 60 or over
• are housebound or living with frailty
• live with mobility difficulties
• have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease
• are recovering from stroke or neurological illness
• are registered blind or partially sighted
• have diabetes or glaucoma
• receive certain qualifying benefits
• live in a care home, nursing home or supported living setting
• cannot safely attend a high street optician without support

If glasses are needed following the eye test, some patients may also be entitled to free NHS glasses or an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of spectacles, depending on their eligibility. 

This may apply if the patient:

• receives certain qualifying benefits
• has a valid HC2 certificate
• qualifies for an NHS complex lens voucher
• is eligible through clinical entitlement

For many older adults, this means the eye test may be free and the glasses cost may also be fully covered or significantly reduced.

Where an NHS voucher does not cover the full amount, it can still make glasses much more affordable.
